Johannesburg
Statistics South Africa’s 2022 Census counted 4,803,262 people in the City of Johannesburg. The City runs a 24-hour emergency line on 011 37 55 911.
Pretoria
The City of Tshwane, which covers Pretoria, counted 4,040,315 people. Gauteng, home to both cities, is the most populous province.
Cape Town
The City of Cape Town counted 4,772,846 people. It points visitors to accredited public transport: e-hailing, taxis, cabs or buses.
Durban
eThekwini, the municipality around Durban, counted 4,239,901 people. Uber’s South Africa page lists eThekwini among its cities.
Those are municipal areas, not built-up urban areas. For rides, the Department of Transport’s 12 September 2025 statement asks for licensed e-hailing operators, branded vehicles, panic buttons and driver and vehicle details in the app. Where details are missing, take extra care.

PEP
Post-exposure prophylaxis is a 28-day course that must start within 72 hours of a possible HIV exposure, says the Department of Health’s PEP fact sheet.
PrEP
The department’s fact sheet describes oral PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) as a daily pill, available in all public primary health care clinics, with an HIV test every 3 months.

General information, not legal advice.
The age of consent is 16. The Department of Health adds that consensual sex between a teenager under 16 and a partner no more than two years older is legal. Local Sex Meets is for adults only.
Section 16 of the Cybercrimes Act makes it an offence to share an intimate image without the person’s consent, punishable by a fine, up to three years in prison, or both. Consent and casual sex covers asking and listening.
