Edinburgh Hookups: Casual Sex Between Old Town and New
Choose your side of the city, catch the last tram or a NightBus and know where to book a test.
Talk it through on the site, agree what you both want, name a public place, then plan how you each get home. The last tram from Newhaven leaves around 11.56pm, and Lothian says its NightBus services run from midnight until 4.30am.
Old Town or New Town: where do you start?
UNESCO lists the two together as one World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1995, says Wikipedia.
Old Town
- The Royal Mile runs down a ridge from the Castle to Holyrood Palace.
- Narrow closes, often only a few feet wide, drop steeply off it.
- Grassmarket, one of the city’s main market places from 1477, is now ringed by pubs, restaurants and clubs.
New Town
- Laid out after a design competition in January 1766, won by 26-year-old James Craig.
- Princes Street faces the Castle, and George Street is the main thoroughfare.
- Rose Street takes its name from England’s national emblem.
After dark
Last tram, then NightBus: what runs when
| When | What runs | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Until about 11.56pm | Edinburgh Trams | The timetable page gives 11.56pm for the last tram from Newhaven, on any day. Check your own stop. |
| Midnight to 4.30am | Lothian NightBus | Lothian’s page lists routes but not nights, so check yours. |
| All day and night | Airlink Airport Express | Lothian says it runs 24/7 between the airport and the city centre. |
The tram line reached Newhaven in June 2023, says Wikipedia. Broughton, at the centre of the city’s ‘pink triangle’ of gay bars and clubs, has Picardy Place and McDonald Road as its nearest tram stops.
Where to meet first, in public
- Princes Street Gardens
- Public parks run by the City of Edinburgh Council, created in the 1820s after the Nor Loch was drained. Easy to find by the Scott Monument. Check the gate times before you go.
- National Museum of Scotland
- On Chambers Street. There is no entry charge, though some special exhibitions do charge. Open 10am to 5pm daily, from noon on 26 December and 1 January, and shut on 25 December.
- Grassmarket and the Royal Mile
- Public streets and squares rather than venues, which makes them easy to name and find.
