Bay and Corrib

Casual Sex in Galway: Corrib to Salthill

A bay, a river, a long seafront promenade and a ride home worth planning.

The short answer

Meeting in Galway works best out in the open: talk on the site first, pick a place like Eyre Square, close to the bus and rail stations, and settle how you each get home. Transport for Ireland (TFI) lists evening buses and trains, but no 24-hour or weekend night bus.

Where to say hello

Public places where saying hello is easy

Eyre Square
Wikipedia dates it to 1710, when Mayor Edward Eyre presented it to the city. The Browne Doorway stands at its north end, and the bus and rail stations are close.
Spanish Arch and the Long Walk
The arches date from 1584, part of the city wall’s extension to the Corrib, and the quays alongside make an open waterside walk.
Salthill promenade
Two kilometres of seafront along Galway Bay, open since 1856. Long, open and easy to talk along.
Galway City Museum
Beside the Spanish Arch on Spanish Parade, with no admission charge. Its site lists 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday, plus Sundays noon to 5pm from Easter to mid-September. The rainy-day plan.

The ride home

Make the ride home part of the plan

No night bus on the list. TFI shows no 24-hour route and no Friday or Saturday night route in Galway. It does list late-evening buses on Bus Éireann routes 401, 402, 404, 405, 407, 409 and 424 and on City Direct 411, plus evening buses on City Direct 410 and 412.

By rail, TFI lists a late-evening train to Athenry (Monday to Saturday) and Athlone (Monday to Friday), plus evening services to Dublin Heuston and Limerick. Check times with the operators. A licensed taxi should have a roof sign and a taximeter and offer a printed receipt.

Around the centre

Wander the Latin Quarter, then pick your spot

Tourism Ireland describes cobbled lanes where buskers fill the air with music and cafés and restaurants buzz from morning until late. Lynch’s Castle, a medieval townhouse on Shop Street, now houses a bank branch. The Claddagh, a former fishing village, sits where the Corrib meets the bay.

Galway is a festival city, with four big annual events:

  • July: Film Fleadh
  • July: Arts Festival
  • Late July to early August: Galway Races
  • September: Oyster Festival

Dates move each year, so check before you plan around one. Wikipedia says the nearby Gaeltacht is why Galway is sometimes called the Bilingual Capital of Ireland.

Galway questions, answered

What happens when the last bus has gone in Galway?

Transport for Ireland lists no 24-hour or weekend night bus for Galway, so a licensed taxi is the fallback. It should have a roof sign and a taximeter, and the driver must offer a printed receipt. In an emergency, ring 999 or 112.

Is Salthill a good place for a first meet?

Its promenade runs two kilometres along Galway Bay and has been open since 1856, so it is long, open and easy to walk and talk. Pick a daytime slot and tell a friend. Galway City Council lists drinking bye-laws from 2015, so check them before taking a drink outdoors.

Where do I get tested for STIs in Galway?
